Surprised that the AirPods Pro from just last month didn’t make the jump. It might be a long time before all accessories change.
Hope the mouse gets a full redesign and not just a port swap.

I came to make that comment as well. Before that I would tend to agree, but I don't see any reason for them to change that port if not for a general trend.

Lightening will fade, not vanish over night. I used to travel for work a lot, and I saw 30 Pin iPod / iPhone docks in hotel rooms for a very long time after the iPhone 5 came out.
My keyboard and trackpad both use lightening, and those aren't really items I upgrade often.
But I think that Apple will move all of its new stuff to USB-C in the next couple of years and then the lightening cable will be light their wired headphones with no mic; 2 pages deep in the "Accessories" section of their online store.

This is the most obvious thing. Of course Lightning won't die overnight, people will still buy older models and use stuff they already have, so it's with us at least for 5-6 years

Yeah, it's the most nothing burger of an article. I'm going to guess it'll be 5 years or so before Apple stops making the lightning cables. Maybe at that point it'll be in the realm of OEMs still making them but it'll slowly fade into obscurity like mini-USB.

Which cable is better?

USB C is better by virtually all measures

USB-C is physically bigger and Lightning is built more to sacrifice the plug to save the device in cases of physical stress.

Not at all.
USB Type C MAY ship with better specs. But if it doesn’t, Lightning is on par if not better for long term usage because of robustness.
If however they upgrade the specs from USB 2.0 to anything better THEN and only then USB Type C is better than Lightning.
And I think for the new iPad they didn’t do that?! It’s just more compatible now.
Wh00ster t1_iuhgxa9 wrote
USB C specs are as good if not better than Lightning, sounds like it is better.
Physical port robustness is indeed slightly better from what I read, but I haven’t spoken to anyone with USB C port issues, nor have I experienced this myself.
Any issues have been very manufacturer specific. I.e. Apple could make a very reliable USB C port if they wanted.

I really can't see how Apple could ship a USB 2.0 USB-C port in an 800+ USD iPhone when an iPad for 600 USD has proper USB 3.0 (or whatever it's called nowadays) speeds
As for the robustness argument, sure, theoretically, the port itself is more robust with Lightning, but I haven't seen USB-C ports failing left and right, especially lately, so we should be fine. USB-C with 2.0 spec is still better than Lightning with USB 2.0 simply because of physical compatibility with other devices

After seeing the new Apple TV remote get USBC, I'm going to be surprised if anymore new/revised Apple products have a lighting port.
