Lightening will fade, not vanish over night. I used to travel for work a lot, and I saw 30 Pin iPod / iPhone docks in hotel rooms for a very long time after the iPhone 5 came out.
My keyboard and trackpad both use lightening, and those aren't really items I upgrade often.
But I think that Apple will move all of its new stuff to USB-C in the next couple of years and then the lightening cable will be light their wired headphones with no mic; 2 pages deep in the "Accessories" section of their online store.
