I am surprised this isn’t a 15 year old article. That Cracked still exists, and they have brand new oral history of The Critic.

Anyways, The Critic was great.

Excuse me, but in the wise words of Jay Sherman, "IT STINKS!"

This ran for only 23 episodes but it feels like it was on longer because it was just absolutely stuffed with jokes. Every episode had so many memorable bits so its impact seems bigger. One of my favorite bits was a President James Monroe film in the style of James Bond

What alot of people forget is that, this show may not have been as funny as the Simpsons, but it was going up against the absolute best seasons of the Simpsons.

So, The Critic was still funnier than 98% of everything else on television at the time.

As much as I've enjoyed The Critic, it always annoyed me that the writers could never seem to settle on who the character of Jay was supposed to be.

He was either a smart film critic with integrity trapped in a world too ignorant to appreciate him, or he was a pretentious blowhard who didn't actually know what he was talking about. Which they decided to go with changed from episode to episode dependent solely upon whatever the plot called for him to be.

I never stopped laughing long enough to even contemplate something like that.

That's a good point. I also vastly enjoy season one more than two and I think it's because in S1 it was much more about his relationship with his son and his family and his focus on his career. The love interest angle always felt forced to me in S2. It reminded me when they gave the Perfect Strangers girlfriends and changed the vibe of the show. They were supposed to be undateable morons. Similarly Jay was supposed to be undateable for various other reasons.

This show really spoke to me, as a person who seems to attract pigeons with the sound of their vo-ARGHDH

When my daughter was in Kindergarten she got in trouble for quoting The Critic. I was never prouder. Also, maybe she was a little too young. Oh well :)

This and Duckman are probably my two favorite criminally underrated animated shows.

Mission Hill was also great.
