For me it's tie between: Breaking Bad (2008–2013)/ The Mentalist (2008–2015)

Although I also like: Bones (2005–2017), Elementary (2012–2019), Sherlock (2010–2017)

But my choice is Breaking Bad/ The Mentalist.

What's your choice?

  • True Detective Season 1

  • Fargo Season 1

  • Breaking Bad Series

Those two are a tier above all for my tastes

1 Breaking Bad

2 The Shield

3 Dexter

4 Sons of Anarchy

5 Ozark

And then a for a procedural crime series I would throw in Criminal Minds

Crime Series would be a crime procedural, like Law and Order, CSI or Monk. Breaking Bad isn't a crime series, its a drama about crime. There is a difference.

My favorite crime procedural would be Psych. My favorite drama about crime would be Breaking Bad.

I read David Simon's book but the series was before my time. I am not sure if Baltimore is the same these days (I am not American) but it gave an amazing depiction of the futility of life in the projects.

I'd probably rate The Shield and Oz on par with each other.

I haven't watched past the pilot of The Sopranos and I think it was one of those shows that ended up passing me by (I missed it). The Wire is the same but I have read Homocide: A Year on the Killing Streets.

I would rate the Italian mafia series Gomorrah as more interesting than The Sopranos, but it's a hard watch too. Like I said, I think that type of show is now past me.

SoA was Sutter's outlet after not being able to do some of the things he wanted to in The Shield. It actually really pissed me off that he finally got to write Dutch as a maniac because it falls into so many cliches of the outsider. Dutch was an excellent cop and whilst awkward, made A LOT of good take downs. He was a far better man than Vic Mackay.

A couple crime themed shows that didn't get a chance:

Mind Hunter

Yeah, it was gratuitous imo, pretentiously so. A mate of mine did finish it but he really struggled with it towards the end. It just seemed entirely unnecessary to go down that path.

The Shield was good because Shawn Ryan was there to temper his "enthusiasm" (shall we say) for the oversaturated violence. I mean, even his character (in only 2 episodes) was overly sick. Just unbelievably so.

You need to define a crime show as being a show about solving crime or committing it. They’re two extremely different types of show.

No, it's not back on yet, and S3 begins airing new year's day on BBC One. In the USA, however, AMC+ has not yet announced a drop date for S3 (sigh).

I meant 'right now' as in I tend to change my mind every five minutes or so. :-)

The original Law & Order. A straight forward premise, 30 minutes of police investigation, 30 minutes of courtroom proceedings, and since they didn't delve into the characters backstories, you could watch any episode, any time, and not have to wonder where you were with all of their lives.

Not a masterpiece, but great comfort food.
