I quite love "Only murders in the building". It is both funny and provides lots of twists. But its a show you enjoy best bundled up with hot cocoa.

I agree, also with each episode being 30 minutes, it's a quick watch.

ah yes i forgot about that one. thanks it is a very good show! steve martin , gomez and martin short are freaking incredible in this. the only part i do not like is that the famous characters so far in season 1 and 2 ( sting and amy )have nothing to do with the murder mystery at all. just filler. but this show reminds me of a tv version of the movie clue. it a blast, short but good!

I tried this, couldn’t get through the first episode. Does it pay off satisfyingly if you stick with it?

Pineapple996 t1_j1zhs1j wrote

I did find the payoff pretty satisfying, but if you couldn't get through the first episode then maybe it's just not for you. I will say that the show basically flips genres almost every episode, so you might start to like it more.

On Amazon, new show called Three Pines. Every 2 episodes covers one murder investigation. But it takes place in Canada. It’s pretty good, with a plot line of missing/murdered indigenous women that carries through the season.

Perry Mason on HBO. I just rewatched season 1 from 2021, new season out in Spring 2023.

redbullrebel OP t1_j1z87wq wrote

thanks but did not like it, it was very easy to predict and it was more about the drama then the actual mystery. it falls into the same category as the series i mentioned. like undoing, little big lies etc.

Big fan of Rhys, best show in the past 20 years is the Americans, IMO. PM is “murder (or mystery) by numbers” and there is some campiness to it, especially on 2nd watch, that I had to look past to enjoy but I think that has a lot to do with trying to pay homage to the original series. Not the best show out there but it has great acting, and a compelling story while adhering to noir and the aesthetics. I definitely look forward to S2.

I agree on Treason. I binged it this week and it became background noise while working. Incredibly poor writing and plot.

A fun mystery series is the recent and little fan-fared The Resort. The wife from Treason is the main character, and she’s hilarious, IMO. All the characters are interesting, it’s a good ride, it’s funny, and I’ll admit, the ending was touching.

jack reacher is awesome, cannot wait till season 2, but a mystery series i would not really call it. same as jack ryan series. it is very enjoyable to watch and i am actually watching season 3 of jack ryan at the moment, but you already get pretty fast the hang of it what is going on. specially with usa army forces helping out :)

Rian Johnson has a new week to week Columbo’esque show coming to Peacock next month. I forget the title but Natasha Lyonne is the lead which is pretty outstanding.

redbullrebel OP t1_j1za8br wrote

lets see if rian follows the same pattern as he did in glass onion and first knive out movie. i have not seen an episode of that serie which is called pokerface, but based on the trailer i just saw. i am going to predict this. there is a man behind it. all the diversity is just noise, cancel it out look who is the biggest white man asshole and you got a winner. now we just need to wait till the series is done and see if i am right! :)

Have you watched Elementary? It’s a US procedural about Holmes and Watson that usually is less simple than some comparable series.

I’ve watched it through a few times now and it’s definitely one of my favourite villain of the week type procedural shows. The Mentalist can also be entertaining.

It’s Canadian but the first 13 seasons are available on Hulu: Murdoch Mysteries. Essentially a police procedural but set during the turn of the century Toronto. It’s so good. Cheesy in parts but also sweet in others. Also plenty of celebrity cameos in characters and actors playing characters. William Shatner guest starred as Mark Twain in an episode.

I don't have any suggestions, but I do feel your pain. Most Murder-of-the-week shows, I can guess the culprit pretty easily b/c of the how its written. And its getting to be the same with a lot the season long mysteries.

I thought The Flight Attendent was great when I saw it, but then I realized Wednesday followed the exact same template.

1

redbullrebel OP t1_j1zbgd0 wrote

that is why i switched over to korean shows. their shows are very deep. sometimes to much drama, but story wise they really know how to keep you engaged. also not many are easy to predict as well, which i really like.

flight attendant was just bad. wednesday i figured out the first part at episode 4 at episode 6 i had it all figured out. it was a good show though. i liked it much more then i thought. but you are right it follows a pattern.

Tradman86 t1_j20o8o2 wrote

There is a new show “Poker Face” starting Jan 23. It from Rian Johnson, of “Knives Out”, among others. He describes it as a murder-of-the-week, ala “Columbo” and “Murder She Wrote”. Stars Natasha Lyonne. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
