UPDATE
For everyone that was messaging looking for the update on my unfortunate situation here it is. A lot of people suggested that I own up straight away and send out apologise and get in front of it before it got traction, but I decided to sit back out of fear and hope the whole thing would blow over and just be joke for people to laugh at me. But no, that wasn’t to be.
I got the invitation from HR requesting a video call, I replied back in confusion asking what was this meeting about and that I was more than happy to talk with them. They only said ‘we will discuss that at the meeting’. So a gruelling 3hr wait until my faith would be decided, I paced my apartment all day my anxiety levels in overdrive.
I was shaking as I clicked into the video call, only to be greeted by not one both two HR staff. The following conversation went something like this:
HR: Hi (redacted), small talk, this call is being recorded and so on. Is that ok with you?
Me: Yeah sure, what is this about?
HR: A member of staff has made a claim of sexual harassment against you.
Me: (Shocked Pikachu face) What! When? How? I would never.
HR: long winded jargon about sexual conduct in the workplace and the seriousness of these claims.
Me: Yes I understand, but I’m still not sure what I’ve done wrong?
HR: So you deny any wrong doing on your part?
Me: Yes! What exactly are these allegations?
HR: We can’t say, but we have solid evidence given by the staff member involved and is backed up by our IT department.
Me: I still have no idea, what this is all about.
HR: Another long lecture about conduct in the work place, followed by if I wasn’t going to cooperate they would have no choice but to start procedures on terminating my contract.
Me: Wow! Hold on, you can’t throw out wild accusations and not show me what it is that you believe I’ve done wrong. I’m sorry but I’m going to have to contact my union rep and perhaps a lawyer before I continue with this conversation.
HR: Wait a minute (they excused themselves and muted their screen so they could talk among themselves.)
HR: Hi again, before you go just one last question. Did you send this email to 16 members of staff? (Along with time and date evidence).
Me: Yes why?
HR: Yet you still deny any wrongdoing? That will be all.
Me: I don’t see how that email could be seen as harassment?
HR: I’m not going to show it here for obvious reasons, but I think you will find that most people would see it differently.
Me: I still don’t understand (Looking over the email on my phone so they could see on the camera) OMG! (Pause for dramatic effect) OMG I’m so sorry, I didn’t even realise, I’m so embarrassed, this was an honest mistake, I would never send such material on purpose, I used my personal phone to quickly edit the report, it was a complete accident, if I was sent the work order on time this would never have happened.
HR: So you finally agree that you sent this?
Me: Yeah I guess so, but never in a million years would I do so intentionally. I’m so embarrassed, I can never go back to the office. (Mini panic attack on camera)
HR: Thank you for your time, we will be in touch soon.
Me: I’m so sorry about all this, it was a genuine mistake that I take full responsibility for, I’ll send out an apology to everyone involved straight away.
After another few calls back and forth between all parties involved, this morning I ended up being place on three month probation and have to take a mandatory sexual harassment workshop. Sitting in the office here and I can already see that the rumours have started and no doubt everyone has seen my junk, so time to keep my head down in shame and be the best employee I can be. Because my boss isn’t pleased with the outcome, it was never revealed she made the complaint but I’m 99% sure it was her.
TL;DR: Acted innocent and confused when HR came calling, Oscar worthy shock and embarrassment when presented with the facts. It was a genuine mistake and I took full responsibility and apologised. Got off lightly but now I’m the laughing stock of the office and everyone has seen my dick.
