There is book called Ella Minnow Pea, about a island that worships the sentence "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog" and have it hanging in city center, put up by their founder 100 years before. The letters start falling off and they take it as a sign from God to not use the letters and the book uses less and less letters as it goes on.

That novelty account is interesting partly because of how active and seemingly serious it is, but also they're Danish. Well, interesting to me.
Alexstarfire t1_j94llgk wrote
Doesn't take much to not use that letter.

guess it takes a lot of talent and even more dedication to write a book in English without “e”

It's a way of showing off. Your ability to plot thoughts sans common symbols shows vigorous brainy utility.
adsfew t1_j921svf wrote
It's not that hard. I regularly write without using the last letter of the alphabet. It's so easy that it's crazy.
Dammit...
KwaadMens t1_j923k02 wrote
Yeah, it's extremely easy. Just use chatgpt.

ChatGPT is ludicrously terrible at creating lipograms. I mean look at this:
> Certainly, here's an example of a lipogram in English that avoids using the letter "e":
> It is not always an unvarying task to craft a paragraph without using a particular symbol, particularly as it is such a common symbol in our writing. But by avoiding its usage, a writer can polish and adjust his or her skills and approach to writing. It can also add an additional layer of difficulty and intricacy to a task that is typically thought of as straightforward. With caution and practice, a lipogram can transform into a captivating and stimulating way to approach writing.

Hm, I’m surprised there isn’t a bot that shows up when someone writes a comment without using a certain letter, like the bot which is summoned when all the words are in alphabetical order.

No less pointless than so, so many things people do especially in their spare time.
Like, speedrunning might be a similar waste of time that a ton of people seem to be into just for the challenge.
Or, what about just watching TV? Sitcoms and whatnot. People do that for hundreds and hundreds of hours. Or watching cat videos.
At least these guys were challenging themselves.

OuLiPo is a loose gathering of (mainly) French-speaking writers and mathematicians who seek to create works using constrained writing techniques. One member, Perec, wrote a similar book called 'La Disparition’.
Jean_Crespin t1_j92ozzy wrote
The English translation of Perec's book is not an easy read, though full points for making the omission relevant to the plot. I assume it works better in French, with a few more basic words available?
blakerabbit t1_j92wmi5 wrote
Actually it’s if anything harder to omit e in French
