They are so old that back when they were founded it wasn't a Finnish company but a Russian one, because Finland had not yet become its own country, just a Grand Duchy that was part of the Tsarist Russian Empire.
They managed to a lot better for themselves once they became their own country.

50+ year old Scandinavian here. We were kind of surprised to see Nokia enter the cellphone market. Before that, we knew the company for rubber boots.

Pirelli also made telecom equipment for a while. There was a lot of overlap between rubber products and telephone supplies in the early copper days, because of the need for insulation.
