I was a young teen back then. I had never heard of it. My sister's both had.

I suspect it was advertised during female centric programming, even on MTV.

I remember it being heavily advertised in magazines that appealed to teen girls. One magazine even ran a contest (can't remember the specifics of the contest) and the prize was Nirvana playing at your school.

The song came out before I had a concept of deodorant and was the rebellious song that older kids would blast driving around town.
