Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Keith. Don't buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!

Record charts are a bad way to judge music.
Especially since the rise of the internet.
Little_Duckling t1_iwgbjld wrote
That true.
What’s also true is that The Rolling Stones have not released any good new music in a long time.

A long time. But not 53 years.

I'm going to have to object to that. The Rolling Stones have not released any popular music in a long time. But they have released a few obscure, but really nice, pieces of work along the way that most people have overlooked.
If you like old blues, the whole Blue and Lonesome album is a true a project of love - they knew going in that it wouldn't be a big money maker, but they clearly enjoyed putting it together. Have you listened to any of it? Can you really say this isn't good music???

In particular, I'd note that it really showcases how good Mick Jagger is as a blues harmonica player, which doesn't always get much attention in the rest of the Rolling Stones discography.
I'd also point out a few other good songs along the way that didn't get much attention.
Oh No, Not You Again and Look What the Cat Dragged In (from Bigger Bang)

Bigger Bang was an interesting album because it was so stripped down compared to some of their previous recent work. A lot of it was recorded with just Mick, Keith, and occasionally Ronnie laying down tracks - Mick even played drums on early guide tracks that were recorded over later by Charlie Watts, and a lot of the bass on the album is by Keith Richards.
Moon is Up (from Voodoo Lounge)

Charlie Watts recorded the "drums" for this track on a plastic wastebasket, in a stairwell. It really captures his "less is more" approach.
And finally, Slipping Away from Steel Wheels is one of Keith Richards' best songs - though Steel Wheels probably counts as a "long time ago" now.

Rumor has it that the Stones are working on new material now, so we'll see what comes next.

Thank you for the detailed response! I’ll check out the albums you’ve mentioned.

A Bigger Bang does have a few duds on it. But some of the songs are really great. The blues album is also really great. Enjoy.

I was a kid in the early MTV days, and I remember the Rolling Stones were one of the bands making videos back then. They were, even in the early 1980s, an “old” band, identified with the ‘60s. But still, Mick & Co. were no more out-of-place in those early video days than Duran Duran or Pat Benatar.
I’m surprised songs like “Beast of Burden” or “Start Me Up” weren’t bigger hits, based on record sales — they got tons of airplay on MTV.

Wei_Lan_Jennings t1_iwgfc3k wrote
And they didn’t even write that themselves. They had to give kd lang a writer’s credit because Mick accidentally borrowed the chorus from “Constant Craving.”
It’s pretty good for late-period Stones though.

Ha yeah they were all over MTV for sure - Beast of Burden (8) and Start Me Up (2) were both top 10 on the Billboard charts

Six of those 15 albums have gone to number 1 though. Most recently in 2016.
