My favorite story like this is the French coastal town that has sporadically had Garfield telephones wash up of their shores for the last 30 some years. A shipping container went over board in the 80’s and was the source of the Garfield phones.

There's a twitter account called "Lego lost at sea" that does beach litter picks on a beach in Cornwall. A Japanese freighter lost a cargo of Lego and they still find things washing up there.

The cargo was lost in 1987

That seems like a bad omen.

There was something similar in England with LEGO pieces. Curiously, a disproportionate number of them have been nautical themed pieces (diving flippers, octopi, ship rigging, cutlasses, harpoon guns, etc)

Imagine being stranded on a raft, after days in the sun you witness an armada of rubber duckies as far as the eye can see

You can still find ones randomly sometimes. It's getting rarer and rarer of course, but you might get lucky. I've always wanted one.

Another little interesting fact: the container ship that lost comtainer with rubber ducks was owned by Evergreen - the same company whose another ship blocked Suez Canal.

t1_ixa1mym wrote

Yeah but Evergreen is also one of the largest shipping companies in the world.

t1_ixauyot wrote

That doesn't make the fact uninteresting. It makes it more relevant today tho...

They didnt try to make it unintressting they just explained the reason behind it. Evergreen is probaly responsible a majority of shipping accidents because they do most of the shipping.

What happened in 2007 then?

The ducks, realising their worth, went on strike. Their demands weren't met so they quit, en masse.

I really hope the company that made these things marketed the hell out of. 15 yrs in the sun and salt water and they were still floating! That's some impressive manufacturing quality standards.

The last major cluster made landfall in France after making their way from the pacific to the Atlantic via the arctic circle for 15 years

Is the northwest passage open or something? I didn’t realize anything could up through the arctic

t1_ixd1tg1 wrote

The ice sheets of the arctic advance and retreat during the year, I imagine the ducks were trapped in ice frequently before thawing and continuing east over Canada and Greenland.

Edit: duh asked about the northwest passage, ducks were never found in the area which suggested they avoided the tight corridors somehow.

There’s a children’s book by Eric Carle about this incident called 10 Rubber Ducks!

Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, wrote an adorable children's book inspired by this called '10 Little Rubber Ducks'. My kids all loved that book.

When I was a kid on Cape Cod one containing mermaid stuffed animals went over board and these things started washing up on shore for something like a year after that. I think my mom still has one.
