Foot entrapment is one of my greatest fear whilst fishing

When crossing a stream, the advice is to face upstream. Wouldn't this reduce the risk of drowning by foot entrapment per the linked article?

We went whitewater rafting in the Nantahala River and the safety briefing video has a charming depiction of a person attempting to stand up after falling out of the raft, only to get their feet trapped and then their head continues to get pushed underwater by the rushing river and they drown. If you fall out of the raft, get on your back and enjoy the ride.

I don't get it, so a passenger falls off a sailboat in the sea or in the middle of a lake, how does this work?

I never would have guessed that people stand up, let alone that standing can cause your foot to come in contact with things on the ground. TIL!

This is why it's important to carry a foot saw when going in water.

OP didn't do a good job converting the information. It's copied word from word from a site about whitewater rafting, so readers there have a frame of reference, but dumped into Reddit with no context, it is confusing without visiting the website.

I do a fair bit of white water rafting and can guarantee that the first thing a lot of people do is stick their feet down to stand. They say don't do this not so much to not hit the bottom but to keep your feet from getting stuck under/between rocks. The water pushes your head under and you drown.

I had a family member almost drown this way.

Nope. :) I was just trying to explain that putting your feet down isn't really to keep you from coming into contact with things on the bottom but more to keep your foot from getting wedged or stuck between rocks. On the ground or otherwise.

"people can get stuck on rocks if they try to stand up in water" is a funny and absurd thing to share on a subreddit about facts that you've learned for the first time. That's why I left my comment.

I don't understand why you are trying to explain to me the mechanism behind getting stuck on rocks when one tries to stand in water.

>putting your feet down is ... to keep your foot from getting wedged or stuck between rocks. On the ground or otherwise.

What does this mean

It explains why you and the other person that responded to my intentionally reductive comment are assuming I don't know that your feet can get stuck on things? Because that's the only thing I'm confused about

You obviously don’t understand that your feet can get stuck in a rock under the water and you will drown. It’s obvious because you are making fun of it in your first comment “feet touch ground WHOA!”

somehow keepin yer head above water does often succeed and prevent drowning, with the lower body being down.

Sad to say reason is not a powerful voice, but it is persistent as events are and does get a hearing.
