Mercedes supposedly did the same at a 1934 Grand Prix and scraped their paint to gain weight. That's how silver became their signature color in motorsports.

I mean, you see it in F1 still. At the beginning of the 2022 season, several of the teams were running with stripped-down liveries because they were overweight.
