Where on the border with NH? There are parts that have nothing to do and parts that have a scene. If you'll be on the border why not do both states regardless?

Hmm, I live on the border to NH. The two comparable "cities" I would say are Manchester and Burlington. Sadly they're no where near eachother. They're fairly similar states considering they're in the same region. I'd suggest either narrowing down where you're going or identifying things that would be important other than night life. I'm not sure our bars will really impress you but pascolos in Burlington is one of my favorite restaurants in VT and Loui Louis in West Lebanon is one of my favorites in New Hampshire.

Oh, Brattleboro (the town right across the river from hinsdale) is in my area. There's a number of restaurants that are pretty good. I particularly like Elliot street fish chips and more as well as whetstone. There aren't very many bars think there's one or two. If you want bars you'll need to go to keene. It's in NH and is a college town of sorts. There's modest man which is a Micro brewery and pretty good. Then you have la machina which has a rotating menu. I haven't been in a little but they should still be on their Jordanian menu which I quite like. Or you could hit up soles which is a themed bar/restaurant that is set in prohibition Era that generally has live music.

Generally Vermont has more cows and open fields.

New Hampshire has more horses and woods and a keg party, guns, motorcycles vibe.

Winchester NH, right next to Hinsdale is definitely the place for nightlife if you're visiting the area. You'll certainly pick up some times you won't soon forget!

From NyC? Go to Nh. You'll love it much more than Vt. Honestly, VT not even worth the stop.

New Hampshire is upside down and Vermont is right side up.

I would like to second this. As someone from the Hudson Valley NY, I found I was treated with the same distain all people not-of-Vermont get. The word for it is Flatlander and it doesn't matter where you are from, you were not born in Vermont, your last several generations have not come from here, you are basically a foreigner. It will take you 5 years to find even the beginnings of friendships, and likely you will never be fully accepted.
It's beautiful here and you will love it, but it will always seem fleeting and you will always be an outsider.

I am in that position and I have accepted it, although I have done the next closest thing which is to be a postman in my town, almost an honorary member status. Still, there is the knowledge that this title is ceremonial, it is not transmissable to my kin, it dies with me should i ever move.

I'd go with New Hampshire.

It’s a completely different vibe. It’s hard to explain. You have to visit both. I would not want to live in NH but I know people who are quite happy there
