Can't you say "show me that my ball joint is bunk my dude."? All mechanics that I've dealt with are really happy to talk to folks who can talk the talk, knows their way around a car, and can hold a convo using industry lingo.

I'd try a non confronting and lax approach, and I always find success with that.
