VTFCU or any local credit union.

Great experience with VT Federal, both as a primary bank and also for a mortgage. I opted with them after other mortgage folks were absent-minded or just shitty (cough, NEFCU).

We had an equally lousy time with VTFCU when our septic system failed and needed replacement. Our lender micromanaged every step and wanted to see the work completed before funds would be released, but the engineer for the state permits and septic installers wouldn't do the work until payment was made. The tellers are great, but that septic replacement ended up taking half a year and seemed far more stressful than it needed to be.

If you’re a Vet or if you’re a child of a living vet that is a customer: USAA or Navy Federal.

Sorry but usaa is expensive and takes advantage of its people, used to have them for coverage.
haloofsin t1_isa7avh wrote
Bummer that’s been your experience. I agree that their mortgage products are more expensive but IME (19 years) everything else is cheaper. I’ve found that no one can beat the car insurance and or credit card rates. I shop around periodically to ensure that’s there case for me.
I would look to credit unions.

I have USAA auto and home. Of the top ranked insurers it was the least expensive.

I’d avoid M&T. The people in the local branches are lovely but the company is a dumpster fire.

Not Citizens. We are unable to make electronic deposits (federal law since we put our accounts into a trust?) not their fault if it’s federal law but they didn’t explained to us this is a downside of moving our money into a trust is the inability to deposit electronically. It’s almost an hour round trip every time someone sends us a check or pull out your pen, envelopes, deposit slip, and stamps. Old school.
And the staff turnover or scheduling (rotating around different branches) means every time you speak with them it’s someone new who is in training and gives you the look of having no clue who you are. Friendly but newbie.

NorthCountry federal credit union has served me very well, they also give you back your atm fees at the end of the month. My friend from Michigan still uses them even after moving out of Vermont 5 years ago

I also really like NEFCU, but I do wonder whether the whole merger situation has left them taking a bit of a PR hit. VSECU customers are REALLY loyal, and I think the activist members opposing it have a point when they question who is really going to benefit most.

I use PNC. They are great remote, I've only been into a branch a few times. I opened the account online. They offer good money management tools; I can see how much I have on hand vs whats committed, paydays, major upcoming bills etc, all easily. They also refund any ATM fees when you use a non pnc ATM. No monthly charge for my account type. Customer service has been good too.
