The only way to make money this year was to be in cash or short something (market, single stock, puts). Technically I guess you could have sold options
Also, most retail traders are conditioned to buy vs short.
Plus, It's also easy to buy anything and look like a hero when the market is going up.
When it's going down, you need to know when to short and then when to get out.
