The question is what happened to crime during the past three years? The police budget isn’t everything. The lax and selective enforcement of crimes like shoplifting and pitching tents in public land sends important signals to would be criminals.

Because for sure, defunding the police is a terrible idea. Only a person living in a dream world would believe otherwise.

That ‘someone’ just talking about defunding the police is council member Charles Allen. He more than talked about it, Allen formally proposed this. Of course, he wants us to forget this.

In addition to defunding the police, please share your other great ideas. I am sure you must have great ones.

My life would be enriched if I knew what other great policy ideas you have beyond defending the police.

Popping over from the other thread to laugh at this multiple alter ego weirdo you’re arguing with

The real question is what was the crime rate before Allen moved to defund the police and what is it now? Then imagine if we had defunded the police.

Homicides were +14% in 2021 for a total of 226. Recent low was 88 in 2012. All much higher than NYC on a per capita basis.

It’s the largest city in the US and one that has until recently, been incredibly successful in bringing down crime. So yeah, maybe DC might learn a thing or two.

[deleted] t1_isu3o1i wrote

BTW, the murder rate per capita in DC is multiple times higher than NYC for example

Wow, you know your argument is weak when you crow about DC’s murder rate comparing favorably to Cleveland and Baton Rouge. DC is the capital of the United States visited by thousands of tourists each year. It can do better.

Well, proposing to defund the police surely would not have helped. I would suggest to start with enforcing all existing laws including misdemeanors.

Huh? The police budget was not cut because Bowzer and others objected.

Great, let’s cut the MPD budget and see crime fall. Can’t wait to see the results

So happy too. Can't wait to see how well those Defund the Police candidates do in November. Should be a woke landslide.

What’s the relative proportion of crime that police prevent vs. react to, in your opinion?
