Getting grants and being solid for a few years and then going full tilt scam under the guise of doing important work is a much better long term grift than riding around on your hoverboard and harassing people while your genitals flop around barely covered, eh?

It really is too bad. There were folks with Casa Ruby that really were helping people. But the non-profit governance that allowed for this is mind-boggling. Why would only the non-profit founder have access to the accounts? Who in the world was helping to govern and run this organization?
warnelldawg t1_iydwg68 wrote
While there are some non-profits that do good work, it is an industry riddled with corruption and fraud.
Very lax oversight, limited controls and ease of startup is what attracts these types of folks to the “non-profits”.
I wish we lived in a world where we didn’t need these entities. If we had a functioning government, we wouldn’t need them.
At least stop making donations to them tax deductible.

Eliminating tax deductions for EVERYONE is dumb. The IRS just needs to step up enforcement on political speech and activities and force blatantly partisan organizations to change their 501c status. There are lots of different types of 501c "non-profits". It's just a lot of organizations lie their way into getting and keeping their 501c3 status which provides the most tax benefits when they should be something else.

Like those megachurches that are definitely doing holy things with all that extra money they have not going to taxes
under_psychoanalyzer t1_iyf1a52 wrote
Just end churches being automatically assigned 501c3. It's not that huge a change. Other c3s have to formally seek the status. But it will never happen because American will burn before it let's go of its theocratic underpinning.

The issue is the last time the IRS did crack down, lo and behold it was a ton of right-winger organizations getting audited. The conservative crowd called foul.
