Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, which is the Smithsonian’s contemporary art museum museum, will close for interior renovations in 2024. so probably worth a visit if you haven’t already in 2023. the museum will probably be closed a couple of years during the renovations.

They’re gonna close the whole thing for a couple years? That seems like a lot. Are their some structural issues or something?

It’s an estimate, but yeah. This isn’t really that unusual. American History was closed for two years due to renovations too and Air and Space had rolling closures over like 6 years. No structural issues I know of but this is the first renovation in the museum’s almost 50 year history. According to dcist they’re trying to modernize the building and especially switch up the entrances given attendance is way up.

Suppose that makes sense, but the Hirshorn exhibits are a lot simpler for display purposes than most of the other museums, so still seems hard to believe.
