It's just a tactic. Pose unreasonable demands beforehand, then when the other party says "no" you can limelight yourself as the good guys because you tried a diplomatic solution.

And sadly that tactic works on some people. I've seen too many comments on here saying that they should come to the table and talk it out. Russia only responds to strength. Their actions have proven that their word is meaningless.

That's exactly what they did in the lead up to the invasion. Ukraine and the West were being unreasonable by ignoring "Russian security concerns" and not agreeing to give Russia veto power over all Ukrainian foreign policy. Ukraine and the West we're never going to agree to it so putin could go to his people and say, "I tried but the west wouldn't agree to my completely reasonable and appropriate offer to avoid conflict. They forced me to invade Ukraine."
