Can't say I blame you. I get that part of Rand's philosophy is that to be an author is to also be a philosopher but God damn I feel like she just said "fuck it we're already at 1000 pages here's the point you ignorant fuckface."

It's one of my all-time favorites. I've read through it twice. She does tend to get a little preachy at times. The wedding and John Galt's radio speeches are almost unreadable.

There are two ways to really think about it imho. Based on observation? It's nigh impossible. We've never observed anything outside of our own planet even approaching the conditions on earth. Based on mathematics? Absolutely. The fact that we exist mean any planet has a nonzero chance of supporting intelligent life. Given the infinite scale and time of the universe it's inevitable that infinite and infinitely diverse sentient life will exist.
