Knowing what the singularity is does not a genius make.

I’m not educated in this stuff at all but I find it very fascinating. Without having a grasp of what consciousness is how could we know if AI possesses it? Some of them could have a form of consciousness already. I’m wondering what happens when AI is designed to make better and better AI. Will it start to advance at a faster and faster rate? And by what yardstick are we measuring AI? What makes one better than another? I want to see an AI that (at least seams) to have free will and can choose to do what it wants. (If there is even such a thing as free will.
