Lived her for over 20+ years. It's just like any other city, only with a much much bigger drug problem.

The only real issues with Manchester are the stabbings or shootings around the clubs off of Depot St but those almost always only involve people that were at the club/bar that had some altercation. Usually two drunk guys fighting over the same girl or something lame like that which escalates to one of them shooting or stabbing the other outside the club.

The homeless generally leave you alone unless they're druggies that are all drugged up and looking for quick cash to support their fix. At night you might have a knife pulled on you if you're walking through a park alone. Just stay out of parks during off hours and avoid long walks alone down the trail systems that go beneath the bridges or by the river. Aside from that it's typical city shit. Occasional car break ins, people egging cars...etc. You'll be fine as long as you treat Manchester just like any other city with problems.

Bonfire is pretty good. They have a second floor with party games (large jenga, large connect 4, darts, bag toss...etc). Top floor sometimes has live music.

Strange Brew can be fun too. They have pool and typical bar games.

Murphy's Taproom can also be fun if there's live music playing. Watch out though, that area can be sketchy.

Since everyone is going to suggest mountains to go to I'm going to do the opposite. If the family member plans to ski on the weekend then I'd avoid purchasing them a pass to a Vail mountain (Crotched, Sunapee, Attitash, Wildcat). As great as they are when there's fresh snow, they're usually the most crowded on the weekends and seem to have the most issues. I attribute it to the cheap ticket prices and under-staffed issues.

slack lining

outdoor rock climbing / bouldering (all you need is a crash pad)

Look into joining a town's conservation group. Most do regular hiking/biking trail maintenance and need all the help they can get. It can be fun if you're into that type of stuff.

Metal Detecting for artifacts (just pickup a $150-400 metal detector)

Gold panning

Build an Axe Throwing target out of stumps and have fun axe throwing or learning how to throw knives.
