I don't see the problem here. They have an apartment they need to get rented. They tried to pressure you by very likely lying to you, just as district attorneys lie to possible criminals. Whether the statement is true or not, you choose not to succumb to high pressure tactics. That is the end of the story. If everyone behaved as you did that method might change but the salesman is never going to be on your side, as I am sure you know. You are using the reverse practice on him by letting him know that you are not going for it. You, of course, are telling the truth.

It seems to me that those who are taking exception to the editorial are long on criticism and short on near term solutions. Let's say for starters, that we raise the minimum wage to $18 an hour within Allegheny County. How is that going to impact the drug trade, the violence culture, gun ownership and usage and the feeling that seems to be universal around downtown, that the city is my personal garbage can. I went downtown last fall and noticed that Fort Duquesne Blvd. looked like a garbage dump. The city has made an effort to make that area more hospitable but it seems to require a round the clock presence to stop the alcohol use, the trashing of the benches, sidewalks and greenery and general lack of healthy outdoor ambience. It is horrible. I called the city to report it and when I went back all the trash had been swept up into piles but not picked up and put into bins. Cans were full but I am sure the first good wind must have blown everything back where it was. One thing that can be done within the city is the adoption of some form of rent control. Pittsburgh is such a small city that when an area becomes popular and gentrified it has a huge impact all over. Now, they are planning new upper class housing on the Civic Arena site. Subsidized housing is an absolute necessity. Who would ever have thought the day would come when working people could not afford to live in Lawrenceville, the South Side or Mt. Washington. This has to be corrected.

Can you not check with the previous owners, neighbors or with Duquesne Light or whoever your energy supplier is? I signed up, in the grocery store with Inspire Energy and they have a flat rate, or did, for the first two years and have saved a significant amount on my first bill.

I think there is a condo like apartment, called a co-op (I think), the details of which are not known to me but they seem to be shockingly cheap when one considers the price of normal condos. I think, one condition is that it must be owner occupied. There are definitely some available in very nice neighborhoods.

You absolutely do not need a car. I would try and allot my funds so that I can live closer to work (though I would avoid Lawrenceville as being too pricey for no very good reason. It has been my experience that under 25's get crushed when buying automobile insurance unless you can pay cash and buy only liability without collision coverage, a risky idea in this city. Parking is also expensive if driving to work daily, but you might be entitled to free parking.

If you don't think GE managers intentionally scam you then you are not paying attention. I cannot tell you how many times I have been in a GE where they have meat on sale, but not under the sale sign. The meat under the sale sign (when they do this) is always more expensive so if you carelessly take a couple packages from under the sign you could easily end up paying substantially more than you planned on spending and not figure out why until you get home and unpack. I have also picked up items under an out of date sale price and have the cashier charge me the new, more expensive price, and never being aware of the GE policy of giving you the first item free when being overcharged. I actually spoke to a store manager who told me that GE does not have time to mark all their items correctly.
