This does happen a lot already. As the other commenter mentioned most picket lines are trying to get the public not to buy from the company. Sometimes unions also call for boycotts.

These folks didn't really have the broad base of support or the funding to do that effectively though. That's one of the big risks of forming an independent union.

The FLSA defines it as someone who regularly makes $30 a month in tips. I don't know if Maine law adjusts that.

Of course switching to using the tip credit doesn't mean employees suddenly get less than minimum wage - the employer would still have to make sure they made that - but I do have to wonder if that's why tip jars are everywhere now.

You'll want a lawyer before you do anything drastic. Reach out to Pine Tree Legal and ask for a consultation. IIRC they're free.

I do not know the laws around roach infestations, but as with many issues affecting the habitability of a unit, you might be able to pay for the fix yourself and deduct it from your rent.

Regardless of whatever decision you make, you will want to keep a written or digital record of your actions, experiences, and communications and you will probably want to begin to look for new housing. Landlords tend to not look kindly on tenants exercising their rights.
