I think suburbs of Boston and suburbs of Providence are much different. Boston is (obviously) larger and has waaaay more work opportunities so the “suburbs” spread goes a bit further out than here. I grew up with family in Brookline and LOVED the area and even though it’s quiet, it still feels like more of a city in my opinion.

Pawtucket is a quick drive into Providence. But you can’t catch a train or really take transportation, so it feels less accessible. When I’m in Brookline or Somerville, I still feel a part of the city. I guess that’s subjective, but to me it feels like a separate town. Some fun stuff to do but in no means a city or busting city suburb environment. If you’re looking for somewhat cheaper prices and a quieter experience, go for it.

Lots of Providence tends to feel like a big town with the look of a city. I like that, because it’s less hustle and bustle, more convenience (I like to drive lol). But lots of people get bored. I say this to everyone, but you really need to take a drive or even stay a few days and explore different neighborhoods and see how it feels. That’s how I figured out where I wanted to live. I love living here but I know so many people who it just isn’t for.

Good- I hope they resolve it for you and at least you have proof of bringing the issues up. I've had my fair share of heating issues too, but 6 weeks is egregious, especially when we had that really cold streak last month.

I wish I knew the name, but they've used an industrial strength drain cleaner and that worked the best. But you'll still catch me with a bucket now and again lol. Best of luck!

I’m in the same boat with the shower plumbing. And I have been, for years (the issue gets resolved but not fully, the drain has never been 100% and gets mostly fixed and then worse over time).

Anyways, I don’t have any recs because I’m so nervous getting on my landlord’s bad side that I don’t bring in outside forces to deal with their incompetence. They’re kind of an asshole. But I’ll be keeping my eyes on this thread and reading the handbook. And I totally feel your pain, maybe we’ll find a solution lol. So…solidarity!

Honestly, try to find something out of Providence itself at least for your first year. I haven’t really looked at apartments in 5 years since I moved, but even then it was slim pickings in the city itself. I could be wrong but you’d probably get more bang for your buck further away (and nothing is actually far from wherever your job will be). The issue with providence apartments is 1) scams 2) great on paper and then you get there and it’s actually a shithole in an area you don’t love. Move to the burbs if you can, less to worry about. Secure a job first and if it’s something towards or in Boston, move closer there/along a commuter rail if you can afford.

I only go to Eastside because it’s so close, the prices are ridiculous. I walk out of there questioning my choice every time lol. Sorry about your job though…but I’d start looking for a new one.

I haven’t been to TJs yet because the thought of the parking brings me great stress. The plus side to Eastside is there’s never anyone there!

This is so dumb lol… I’ve lived ALONE as a young woman in Fox Point (probably one of the safer options) on a busy street for 6 years and have never had a break in of my car or home, or any sort of violent interaction. I love living here and I still would even if crime upticked a little bit.

OP is looking for safeish neighborhoods, and that’s what people are recommending. That said, +1 vote for Fox Point.

Whether or not you want to argue yuppie politics… The east side needs an affordable grocery store. There’s plenty of people that aren’t high income earners (myself included) and groceries are tough unless you want to make a whole drive out of it. Trader Joe’s really is affordable and walking distance to many!
