The 1995 is probably the closest but it really depends on why you are reading it and what you are studying. It's not a difficult book. If there are minor differences between the show and the book, and you mention them somehow, you can bet your lecturer will spot it. For e.g. I watched, and really enjoyed the recent Emma adaptation, but I'm pretty sure they changed the dynamic of Emma's sister and her husband.
I remember suffering through a number classic French novels (not my first language). I barely remember them but it was really worth it in terms of improving my reading and writing.
