I kept thinking this whole reading the book. I have apparently been living under a rock and missed that this book ever came out - found it while looking for Hail Mary at my local library.

But your summary is spot on. I kept thinking “Jazz is annoying but she really is not that different from Watney - just a) woman b) not a “nerdy scientist”

I kept thinking - would I have been less annoyed by Jazz if she were a he? I am sure it’s part of it.

And also - as OP mentioned I think there were a few too glaring “men writing women” moments. Eh Weir is also likely just not that good at writing women.

“Sophomore book”. I thought that to myself a few times reading Artemis.

I appreciate he tried to write a female protagonist, but I did not buy it. Not sure whether Wier heroes just read off when they are women of he is just not great at writing women. Like - would Jazz be less annoying as a young man? Was I annoyed because of my prejudices - because Jazz was a young woman and not a man? I kept thinking that while reading the book.
