The Consumer Reports car buying guide just came out. I highly recommend you pick up a copy- it looks at both new and used cars for reliability, resale, which model years to avoid, etc. we are also in the process and I have found it so helpful. I’m leaning towards a small SUV - former rentals are a great value if you can find one that fits your needs. Usually under a year old and less than 20,000km with a substantial discount ( my last one I saved 30% off list)

As soon as you call insurance it opens a claim whether you use it or not. 3 claims in a year and you are sent to a high risk insurer for triple the cost. They are for disasters, not wear and tear.

Reply to I (27F) broke up with my boyfriend (27M) of 4 years after he said he wasn't ready to live with me. Have I made the right decision? by Ill-Inspector3071
I dated in a similar situation for 5 years. I was ready for marriage and a family, he wasn’t. We broke up. The next year I moved in with my new boyfriend and we agreed on a one year trial. After the year we would marry or split up. Happily married with 2 kids. If you are in different places you can’t force him to be ready. My husband is older and was ready for a commitment when I was. Move on.

Unless there is damage because of a weather event I have never heard of this. Sounds unrealistic.
