Hong Kong is independent in name only - it is totally a part of China, yet the charade continues that Hong Kong has some autonomy. The reason for this, of course, is to lure foreign investment, but it's not really working.

I've seen videos of conscripts trying to run away - it's hilarious and sad at the same time. Can you imagine being forced to have to fight and die for your country, a country that is not worth fighting for. I mean, Russia could be a great country, but its governance for centuries has been abysmal.
KimCureAll OP t1_j1yw4zk wrote
I don't think Russia can easily run out of ammo either, but it can run out of soldiers if the war continues for a long time. What's the latest count on Russian casualties? Well over 100K? Who in their right mind would voluntarily want to fight for Russia?

Reply to A court in Maldives on Sunday found the former president guilty of money laundering and accepting a bribe and sentenced him to 11 years in prison. The Criminal Court of Maldives also ordered Abdulla Yameen to pay a fine of $5 million by DoremusJessup
Yameen was totally in China's pocket - it was good to see him lose and even better now to see him sentenced. We'll see if he ever pays up and actually spends that much time, if any, in prison. The corrupting evidence of China's BRI is evident for all to see. No country comes out ahead dealing with China.

Putin must be really desperate for "success stories" at this point even if it means shooting down more commercial airplanes. I really do have to wonder why the decision to open Russian airspace given the current situation and Russia's horrible track record. The people manning the missiles are incompetent.

Imagine the people power of 300,000 employees! In the end, they are defenseless against all the guns pointing at them. Their company is so big, it would qualify as a large city in most places in the world.

So what does it mean for Foxconn that owns it? Probably on the books they own it, but it seems the Taiwanese owners have little say over workers' rights, policy, etc.

We know how dangerous that can be. Let's not forget Russia shooting down a Korean airline in 1983 and a Malaysian airline in 2014. Did Russia ever say "sorry!" or "we'll pay!" - actually, no.

I have often wondered how that business deal is going. I can't imagine smoothly, even before covid. Are all the employees Chinese in that location? Does Taiwan actually make any money with that factory or do Chinese officials rake in all the profits?

Quotes from the article: "They were Foxconn employees who escaped from the factory and were walking home," wrote a user of WeChat in a post about the social media images. "Some people were walking amid wheat fields with their luggage, blankets and quilts. I couldn't help but feel sad."

Isn't contributing to the UN like flushing money down the toilet? Even former UN employees have openly talked about the huge amount of wasteful spending at the UN as well as the mismanagement of funds. I really do hope those funds go towards curtailing terrorism - it's a noble use of money, and glad to see India doing this.
