The quality of metal used has changed due to exhausting higher quality sources and to minimize production price. Hammer heads didn't used to break in half when you hit something.

If you yank a bent nail from an older structure, you can hammer it straight and easily use it again. New nails bend like noodles and are very difficult to reuse or finish driving if they have bent even once

That sounds absolutely awesome if used for food packaging, like replacing all those plastic clam shells and soda can ties. At first I was worried this was going to be like when they foolishly replaced wiring insulation with soy and was imagining the rodents salivating over newly edible algae car parts and electrical boxes after they finished off the wires.

I saw a bunch of scientists weighing in on this when it was posted elsewhere and it does actually have high ongoing costs custom tailoring it to each patient and expensive materials.
