They were trained to do this to protect navy ships from air attack. There’s a story about a navy chaplain that was a Catholic priest complaining that it was a form of suicide and therefor a mortal sin. An aviator told the chaplain that they would do their best to get out of the plane as it went down so it wasn’t suicidal.

The one that I have says MicroPlane on a bright green rubber handle. If you search "microplane" on Amazon it is one of the first results. It's been going strong for 7 years and I only have two scars to show for it.
The key to longevity is to lift a bit on the back stroke or the individual blades get pressed down.

It is probably the most accurate movie depiction of life on a sailing warship. It is also a great, great movie. And if you'd like more there are 20 books in the Aubrey/Maturin Series, which are widely regarded as the best historical fiction. I think the NYTimes calls it the best series ever.
