I agree with you, OP. When reading for pleasure, I’m under no obligation to read every word, sentence, paragraph, whatever. Or to finish the book, for that matter. I read how I like. What I like. When I like.

That said, I generally do try to read as I assume the author intended. But, if a book doesn’t grab me within the first 10-15%, I have no issue with skipping ahead to see if it gets better. Occasionally, I’ll even skip to the very end, just to see how everything turns out (for books where I’m not invested in how we got there).

It’s a little more difficult with books of short stories, but I’ll generally try to give 2-3 stories a try to see if I like the author’s style. Again, I’ll skip through the volume.

Unless someone made it very clear that they wanted a specific book, I wouldn’t give books as gifts. Not even to a bona-fide book lover. I think it would put too much pressure on the recipient to read, enjoy and report back to me. Suppose I picked a book they didn’t like. Would they feel obligated to finish it?

I’m not much of a gift giver, though. Unless I am thoroughly comfortable that I know the recipient’s tastes, I tend to give gift cards. And often, I give the ones that are not tied to any one store or business.

This was my first thought, too. I LOVE my public library!

But we have to consider that some people may not have access to a local public library. Or that they may not be able to get there for one reason or another. That said, if there IS a library nearby, perhaps that library has home delivery services. Not all do but some do. If I understand correctly, a borrower probably needs to “qualify” to be eligible and the qualifications will vary by the library. Anyway, it’s something to consider.

Additionally, I plugged “netflix for books” into search and came up with a few alternatives. Whether they are good or viable or reputable, I don’t know, but it couldn’t hurt to take a look.

It was probably a little over 90 minutes, door-to-door. I drove from home to the train station, took the train, then walked to the office. The nice thing was, I truly loved train travel (still do!), I love driving and I got in some exercise, so the whole commute was very delightful and beneficial!

Here are a few about cars and/or the experience of driving (or using the car theme to get the message across) but not necessarily about having/buying a new car:

  • Cars (by Gary Numan)

  • Low Rider (by War)

  • Cruisin’ (by Smokey Robinson)

  • Free Ride (by Edgar Winter)

  • Pull Up to the Bumper (by Grace Jones)(hehe this one might be a stretch…)

  • Freeway of Love (by Aretha Franklin)

  • Fast Car (by Tracy Chapman)

  • Life is a Highway (by Tom Cochrane)

Cute quiz! Thanks for coming up with a bit of entertainment! Unfortunately, I couldn't name even one of the bands. I guess they aren't genres in which I'm well-versed.

Anyway, as you asked, here are a few more, although these groups/bands might be a bit old. I also provided one of their more popular songs, to give people a hint. Hope that's ok!

  • King : Queen

  • Coldsnap : >!Always and Forever!<

  • Outer Square : Inner Circle (correctly guessed by our OP!) Song hint was “Bad Boys” (used as theme song for Cops TV show, by the way)

  • Quiet Feet : >!Burning Down the House!<

(Edited to update for a correctly guessed answer)

That’s amazing! How did you do that? And where in Philadelphia does it represent? I haven’t been there in years and was wondering if it was someplace I knew. Looks like it’s close to Center City. Coming in from the south, perhaps?
