Pretty much, each season tends to have one big central mystery that is slowly developed, some are more compelling than others but they're all very fun in an absurd and over the top sort of way. The characters have their own personal arcs that carry through and there are also plenty of little one-off storylines.

Definitely not much in the way of an overarching plot so if that's your thing it might not be for you but it's fun to watch the characters and their relationships develop as they move through different stages of their life, there's definitely a good deal of continuity, it's just not so structured around strict plot development.

It was definitely very popular in it's time but I think Desperate Housewives is extremely underrated nowadays. Not a perfect show but it's consistently entertaining throughout with a very unique and distinctive tone that effectively balances wild shifts from melodrama to comedy whilst never making the two feel at odds with one another.

I can obviously understand why it's not particularly popular among the demographics that frequent Reddit but I'd recommend it to anyone willing to set aside any preconceived notions they might have based on the title and premise.

There are so many good shows and not nearly enough time to watch them all. I can't really binge things like I could when I was a teenager.

I may still decide to watch the first season but my interest in the show is rooted almost entirely in a season 2 casting decision so I'm having to mull it over a bit.

How much of the experience do you think I'd be missing out on by skipping season 1?

I know it's mostly a new story save for one or two recurring characters. I'm mainly concerned that there might be lines or references that spoil the first season in case I decided I wanted to go back afterwards.

I just really want to see Michael Imperioli and I don't want to have to wait lol.

I wouldn't say it's overrated. Whether it's the greatest of all time is always gonna be a matter of subjective opinion but it's definitely in the running, there'd have to be many more excellent shows for it to not even be a contender.

I can't think of another show that is as well written whilst also having so many moving parts. It's an incredibly dense show with a vast interconnecting web of characters that touches on a fuck load of relevant societal themes and tells dozens of compelling human stories whilst doing so. That's not the only measure of quality but it's an area where it really does have other shows beat in my opinion.

The events depicted in Vikings are much more based in legend than real verifiable history anyway.

Not denying that the show goes off the rails a bit, it's just that the concept of a historically accurate Viking show isn't all that feasible in the first place. This is somewhat the case for any historical fiction but it's especially true when it comes to pre-modern societies who weren't known for writing down their histories.
