I love Leo and I think he's great. The first and only time he really stood out to me as being not terribly good was Shutter Island. It was because I couldn't stop seeing him perform the exact same speaking patterns, squinting, and mannerisms that I had seen in a hundred other roles he's had. They're always there, but in Shutter Island they struck me as very prominent. I feel the same way about Denzel, he just speaks loudly and confidently and authoritative yet friendly in any role he plays.
I don't really agree on any of the three movies you mentioned, I thought he was the best in all of them. Minus Nicholson in the Departed, he was better than everyone.
