It's important to realise that reality always makes scientific sense. Science exists to describe reality, not to dictate how it should behave.
If we find that some people suffer horrible mental distress when they are treated as the gender that aligns with their birth characteristics, and treating them according to their identity resolves that issue, then science doesn't get to disagree. Saying 'You have genitals X, therefore you should identify as gender X' isn't science, that's dogma.

Sure, but that only seems like a significant difference because of human time frames. Those 20,000 years describe the difference between being at exactly half of the original mass, and functionally half of the original mass.

It's a bit like saying that people are legally changing their names to Bill Gates so that they can pirate Microsoft Office. Completely irrelevant, a massive personal change, and nobody was stopping them in the first place.
