It's almost comical how wooden he is in every scene. I can sometimes justify a character being wooden and weird (sometimes it almost fits the material), but it just really doesn't work here.

Reply to Breaking Bad or The Sopranos, and why? by RichAf26
Sopranos and it's not even close. Breaking Bad is a good thriller, Sopranos is one of the best (mob) comedies, has the best dissections of masculinity, and is probably the best mob story since Goodfellas.

The mockumentary thing is so grating, because the show really looks beautiful at times, and then the needless zoom ins come in.

It was a joke about the show being shilled for and promoted on this sub all the time.

To me it's really about the characters and gags; it's a really funny show. However, it's nowhere near some of the great dramas it's being compared to (such as Sopranos, which is also funnier) and that does it a disservice. On its own it's pretty good

It's near perfect, but the cancellation hampers it. The film works as an epilogue tot he show, but as ending it's kind of weak, lacking the bite of the original.
Season 3 is wonderful, but it also feels like half a season. Had it had maybe one more season, we would be talking about maybe top 3 shows of all time. As is, it's still one of the best shows with some of the best dialogue.

Wind River and Hell or Highwater (former directed by him) are excellent, Sicario a tight thriller directed by Villaneuve.

Which is a terrible shame, Hell or Highwater and Wind River are easily the best things he's ever done.

Skipping three! Thanks, that's apparently the worst one.

Out of interest, are you going to circle back to the movies, or are you only in with the series?

I just had a horror franchise marathon with a bunch of film franchises (Scream 1-4 and The Romero Dead trilogy have been the best so far) and I'm slowly getting to Chucky - are any of the films skippable before I get to the show? I would love to just get the best of Chucky, but don't necessarily want to sit through the worst installments.
Hyped for this whole thing.

Reply to Movies like First Reformed, Aftersun, or Taxi Driver? by InfiniteWar
BEE_REAL_ is on point.
I'd add Mike Leigh's naked, as well as Schrader's Card Counter (follow up to First Reformed). Otherwise you're det with Dryer, Bergman, Ozu.
