Yes. The Earth and the Moon are tidally locked, so if the Moon was the size of the Earth we would have what you posit.

A pair of second-hand binoculars might suit you as starting equipment.
Many of the successful comet spotters used binoculars, a comfortable seat, and electrically-warmed slippers. They familiarised themselves with all of the objects in one place and then noticed if anything new turned up.

Yes, but although Andromeda is larger than our galaxy it isn't a large galaxy by astronomical standards, and it is destined to merge with our own, in the fullness of time.
