Consider yourself fortunate if you have gas heat and hot water. That is usually the cheapest heating option besides wood, which is dirtier and requires more work.

You could try setting your heat to 60 degrees at night and throw on an extra blanket if needed. My thermostat is 60 at night and 64 during the day. Heating at night when it is colder outside is more expensive than heating during the day.
