We'd probably all die horribly but I'm going to need Randall Munroe to figure out in which order we're going to freeze to death, go up in flames, get fried by radiation and drown from massive tsunamis.

In the spirit of the original question, you could argue: why is it obvious that 5x² means 5*(x²) and not (5*x)²?
Indeed people often get confused over -x²: is that (-1)(x²) or (-1x)²?

Exactly. When people are talking about saving the earth, they really mean saving humanity. If we fail, it'll probably even be for the better, as far as the earth is concerned.
