Not everyone uses subtitles when watching films or TV when they’re in their own language. I’ve always found it to be incredibly distracting unless it’s a non-English soundtrack. Of course, I have a pretty decent sound setup, so I rarely have issues with hearing what people are saying, except for rare cases like what Nolan did with Tenet. I personally think this tech is pretty cool to be honest.
