Reply to What did Kim Basinger did in LA CONFIDENTIAL that warranted an Oscar win? by Anastasia_Lockheart
May be in the minority here, but I never understood why L.A. Confidential was such a darling at the Oscars. It's a good, well-made movie and all, but I don't get what made it so special. And yeah, this would include Basinger's performance, which I thought was fine.
Edit: Also, aside from the Rollo Tomasi thing, I thought the book was better.

Face/Off, no question.
The Rock and Con Air are a helluva lot of fun, but neither are as imaginative, as intense or as freakishly over the top as Face/Off. Face/Off is a perfect blend of high concept and high action; manages to be a blockbusting '90s action shoot-em-up while also pulling off this weird, nightmarish Twilight Zone plot. It's a goddamn experience.

Yeah, he's a standout actor in pretty much everything I've seen him in. But his first major performance in District 9 was Oscar-worthy, in my opinion. And for movies like Elysium or that stupid Oldboy remake, I'd say he's half the reason either of those are worth watching.

Sharlto Copley as Wikus in District 9. Pretty sure he'd only been a producer until then.

IIRC, didn't the husband (and yeah, I'm pretty sure he was the dentist she mentioned in the beginning) only come in because Helen Hunt was too heartbroken to face Tom Hanks?

Watched it again recently. Truly beautiful.
A part I completely forgot about is after he gets back, and he's alone in the room where they celebrated his return. He's looking at the table stacked with seafood, and holds up the lighter flame, reflecting on how much he struggled to catch fish and build a fire.

Ready Or Not and The Hunt. Both solid movies.
Something similar that hasn't been mentioned yet: does The Cabin in the Woods count?

To quote Ron Burgundy: "Compelling and rich."
They aren't my favorite movies or anything, but I do quite enjoy them. The world, the characters, the general tone and atmosphere. I even enjoy the cheesy, generic, old school storylines. More than anything, though, I just appreciate the amount of effort they put into these things.
If ATWOW is any indication, then I do think they'll continue to get better as it goes on. The storytelling will likely improve, but I wonder if the special effects won't be as stunning if/when the franchise outlives James Cameron.

His character was in the original Watchmen, but, in the new one, he's a little too removed from the plot to be THE bad guy. In my opinion, at least.

The Mission.
As I recall, he's a noble, kindhearted, pacifistic missionary in that movie.
Also Kingdom of Heaven and Man in the Iron Mask, as others have said. And he does technically save the day in Watchmen (2019), even if the character he's playing is more villain than hero.

I kinda agree. Even though I think it's still a pretty good movie, nothing in it (except the surgery scene) ever quite matched the level of terror and anxiety I was expecting based on those trailers.
TheDaysKing t1_j1vbomf wrote
Not really a trailer (although I think there's a version that's edited together with the actual trailer), but I love the promo for Face/Off where it's John Travolta's character talking about Nicolas Cage's character as the camera slowly pans around him... then after it's done a full 360, we see that Travolta is now Nic Cage.
While it did mislead me into thinking Face/Off would be even more out there than it already was, I still think about that trailer/promo/whatever often. Blew my little kid mind, back in the day.

Reply to Tim Robbins should have won Best Actor for The Shawshank Redemption over Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump by Scmods05
Hanks is a bit derpy as Forrest, but it makes the more emotional scenes all the more striking, imo. The scene where he learns that he has a son is still a massive tearjerker.
