Reply to TIL After the Aral Sea dried up significantly, Kazakhstan revived the northern part of the lake while the South Aral Sea in Uzbekistan is almost completely desiccated. Kazakhstan’s 12km-long dyke saved part of the northern sea by connecting it with the southern section by Ok_Copy5217
The dyke actually cuts the north from the south, allowing the water from the river to be held instead of flowing south and evaporating.
That article is mad. The Kazakhs are back fishing freshwater fish whilst the Uzbeks are reluctant to do anything similar because of their success farming cotton. To stop the continued waste of water, which spills over the top of the dyke, the Kazakhs want to increase the height of the dyke by 4m.

I listened to an amazing podcast on BBC Sounds about rice farmers who were farming rice, fish and ducks. Absolutely fascinating but I'm buggered if I can find a link to it.

I wish I was smart & old enough to have taken Latin. This is my favourite part of every film I have seen, but I'm just dont have the brain to comprehend what they're doing. 😞

We had that bollocks here in NZ too. Another reason given for not increasing the number of training facilities was that once qualified, the doctors & nurses would go to another country; no thought whatsoever about bonding or writing off student loans if they stayed for x years, just "nah".
At the same time non-elective procedures are being cancelled because we don't have the staff...
