From what I understand from Netflix's The Movies That Made Us, Tim Burton didn't really have much to do with nightmare before Christmas but got a lot of the credit. I think he just has a unique drawing style and people like his characterization as a somewhat twisted individual. But I bet he just slaps his name on things nowadays.
