Given your location I bet you can find pretty good deals on Lowa and Hanwag boots. I wouldn’t even bother looking out of country.

Pay attention to where the Mammut boots are made. Most (if not all) are made in Vietnam now. Lowa still makes theirs in Germany or Slovakia.

According to SW their socks are still made in US. http://www.smartwool.com/blog/socks-made-in-the-usa.html Packaging also says “Made in U.S.A. of imported yarn”. The rest of their clothing is most likely made oversees.

I use my Lowa Z8’s for hiking any time I think there might be water crossing. Otherwise I use my Lowa Zephyr mids. Neither are bifl, but they are rock solid 3-5 year boots. Soles are not replaceable because they are injection molded to uppers.

Electronics back then cost too much for planned obsolescence. Newer tech is usually made with quality components. I’ve got 12yr+ led/plasma tv’s that still work flawlessly, but my buddy’s 3yr old 4K just died….again!

You can easily find these at thrift/charity stores. I like to buy newer Sony, Timex, and Panasonic clock radios and use for same purpose as op.
