That was my impression, too. I read pretty much every single book about UFOs from my local library in the late 80s/early 90s. The MIB definitely did not strike me as a comedy duo. I remember being actually kind of surprised by the concept of the movie when I first heard about it.

One thing I love about this movie is the change of scenery. It starts in this godawful snowy winter in Detroit, and then ends up Los Angeles. It gives a sense of scope.
