It also helped that Spielberg shot all of the VFX heavy sequences first, to give ILM as much time as possible to complete the film. Even still, it was noted at the time that the film was still shooting when they dropped the Super Bowl ad that had completed visual effects in it.

Reply to TIL Poltergeist, which came out in 1982, was rated PG. This is despite not just the movie fitting perfectly into the horror genre, but also many adult themes including the smoking of marijuana and a deep dive into the occult. by duganaok
Poltergeist was actually very nearly given an R rating but Spielberg was able to argue it down by pointing out that despite the intensity of the scares (and some of the gore like the face ripping), nobody is killed in the movie.

I saw alt-J perform Breezeblocks at a newcomers showcase at SXSW the summer before they blew up. The rest of their set was weird as hell but that song was such a banger that I knew it was going to be a hit.

I saw Icona Pop perform this with Charli XCX at a Rolling Stone showcase at SXSW (I was working their DIT assist) and I was immediately like “oh this is going to blow up”.

Honestly they should just bring Stockard Channing back as Rizzo and just play it completely straight.

A precursor, Henson directed this six years before Labyrinth (and Willow doesn’t much belong in the conversation).

De Palma mailed Hoskins a check for his contracted fee of $200,000 with a "Thank You" note, which prompted Hoskins to call up De Palma and ask him if there were any more films he didn't want him to be in. by KongoOtto
I think Denzel getting paid his full salary twice on American Gangster (once when it was greenlit but fell apart just before shooting, and then again when it came back as a Ridley Scott joint) is still the greatest pay-or-play exploit ever.

You know the original doesn't have any computer graphics save for the Death Star schematic the take out of R2, right? That's 100% motion control, models, and optical compositing.

u/Critcho already mentioned the speedy turnaround time for Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS in 2005 but it should also be mentioned that his film MUNICH, also from 2005, began filming the day that WAR OF THE WORLDS came out (4th of July weekend), finished shooting by the end of August, was edited by October, and had score and sound effects finished by November. It came out Christmas that year, less than half a year from the first shot to the first showing, and it wasn’t even a scramble for The Beard.
