Well, it's not really brain damage for these people but rather indefinite intellectual hibernation. They could use their brains, they just decided not to.

If I were more cynical I would suggest a correlation between a significantly weaker economy and the advantage of having a lot less mouths to feed that contribute little to said economy.

Also: maybe just pause playing Pokemon for some time until he caught up with his game, assuming he feels like playing it again. I would probably not want to start over for some time, but it depends on the game and my mood. However, if my partner deleted her save, that wouldn't make me feel any better at all. There is no reason to that :)
