I think there are some pretty horrific discriptions plus the whole stream of consciousness entering the mind of the main characters is hard to experience. Overall 10/10 book one of the greatest ever written.

I saw that praise from Card and he is a crazy old man who hasn't written a good book in about 20 years. I'm not giving up yet but I also don't have the time to read Brandon Sanderson it's a little too much. I do like Moorcock but I figured it odd he would praise Sanderson, in my experience Moorcock hates world building and world builders just look at what he thinks about Tolkien. Which is why I disregard his opinions on other authors, while I like his work I don't agree with his criticism.

I only started reading Elantris which was a rare dnf for me. Terrible writing and bland uninteresting characters is what broke me. He is my brother's favourite author so he is probably good but Elantris was just really really bad

I understand the anti-colonial sentiments in Heart of darkness but I still hate it. Horrible book.

I think the use of typical white saviour narrative is a great way of criticising colonialism. On the environmental front you are correct I should have said that Dune is ecological. LoTR is definitely environmental and critical of industrialization. But it is not anti colonial.

Check out Loaded By Christos Tsiolkas a great look at what it's like to be a queer second generation immigrant in Australia. Nihilistic as well.

I think the are great if you don't know much about Greek mythology and are just looking for something really simple. An excellent gateway into reading which is why is very popular with 8-16 year olds. For me the writing is way too simple and because I have gone on to read Greek mythology the schtick of taking Percy and his friends into the Greek stories just wasn't interesting anymore.
